Day 3

Day 3

Bagels then Boston

Although the hotel breakfast was decent, we saw a “Bagel Boys” yesterday and couldn’t leave without trying it. After grabbing our bagels we hit the road to Boston.

On the road again

The 1.5 hour drive started off good, the closer we got to Boston the more we slowed down. We knew we would hit some traffic so we tried not to stress and just enjoyed the city views.

I thought I had done enough reading about Boston’s parking to get us a good spot. However, when you factor in crazy pedestrians, construction, and one way streets… things get tricky. We circled the hotel 3, maybe 4 times before deciding to park in a lot next door for $15 less than the hotel valet. Thankfully we were able to check in early and we got our free cookies. All is well again!

Freedom Trail

Our main reason for coming to Boston was to experience the history so we started our day with the Freedom Trail. The start of it was a half mile down the road from our hotel so we set off to the Boston Commons.

The first big stop was one the main cemeteries. It was fascinating to walk around and look at all of the headstones and try to piece together the family trees. We found Paul Reveres first wife off to the side with no significant markers, buried next to Paul Reveres Dad.

Following the trail

We continued on following the red line of bricks on the ground to see more sites. Knowing we only had one day we tried to keep moving, but I still got a lot of good pictures along the way.

Boston Massacre Street

The Point

After a few hours of site seeing our feet were sore and we started to get a little hungry. Knowing we didn’t want to stop for long we walked into the closest cute corner bar for an appetizer and some drinks.

Turns out sitting next to the window and sight seeing was extremely entertaining. Watching people interact, take pictures, and the families with matching backpacks and T-shirt’s was exactly what we needed to rejuvenate.

North End

We started the freedom trail in the south end by our hotel and now we were making our way to the north end section. We saw the Paul Revere house, the area he resided and another cemetery. We went into a few souvenir shops but they were busy and like most tourist towns they had a lot of the same things.

Backtracking

Not wanting to make the same mistake as yesterday and getting way too far without considering the walk back we decided to turn around. It was getting late and a lot of the sites were closing anyway. We followed the trail backwards, surprisingly seeing a lot we didn’t catch the first time. The first place we saw with a bathroom was the Boston Market Place. This turned out to be really cool. It had all kinds of small stands to get food, drinks, and more. Of course the ice cream caught my eye and I had to try some for the 40 minute walk back to the hotel.

Sidewalk rush hour

So, it’s a Monday in Boston around 5… I’ve never been to New York City but I can imagine it is similar to this. Bobbing and weaving through people, crossing streets with a herd and listening to the honks of angry drivers. We quickly realized why the locals leaving work walked with headphones in. The construction on buildings frequently impeded the sidewalks so we had to cross- walk a block- and cross back over several times. It was a real hoot.

Nap time

After a little nap we were ready for dinner. There are so many options, but not being seafood eaters helped narrow our options.

We ended up walking to the “Pizza and Ice Cream Company” or “Picco.” It was perfect evening walking weather and we got some cool views of the sunset.

I’m going to crave this pesto pasta for a long time
Strawberry shortbread, raspberry sauce and house made ice cream. Amazing.

We got back to our hotel, watched some friends and crashed. Today was great but we can’t wait for a chiller day in Maine tomorrow.
